Quick comment on the revival of the Dire Wolf

Our time works with hype and media stunts. But what is actually behind the dire wolf story?

Ancient DNA can be recovered only in bits and pieces with most of the information gone. If you are highly skilled and lucky, you will be able to obtain some genes that you can work with and use to perform gene editing in a related species (e.g grey wolf).

The result in this case is a genetically engineered grey wolf that looks like a dire wolf, but we have no idea what the actual DNA of this species looked like. It´s still a great piece of scientific work, and they must have been extremely creative in the process, but it is not a true dire wolf as they claim!

So in fact, the dire wolf stays extinct. Whether or not we want to create new species is another topic.
